Hot Air Balloon Rides

Hot Air Balloon Safety

The sport of hot air ballooning is one of the oldest and safest forms of aviation enjoyed by hundreds and thousands of passengers and millions of spectators a year. Over the past 21 years, SkyCab has maintained an impeccable safety record as a result of our commitment to safety. We uphold our commitment by training and hiring safe pilots, using top of the line and well maintained equipment, and constantly changing and adapting our practices to remain at the forefront of the industry in safety.

SkyCab is also a member of the Professional Ride Operators (PRO) a division of the Balloon Federation of America (BFA). PRO is an organization whose sole goal is to ensure safety, reliability, and accountability throughout the balloon ride industry. Operators who carry a PRO certification have agreed to operate their balloon ride companies under standards that exceed those set forth by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

All SkyCab pilots are commercially licensed by the FAA and have at least 5 years of experience flying hot air balloons. Each year our pilots and crew attend safety seminars put on by the Balloon Federation of America.

SkyCab owns and operates over 13 different hot air balloons. Our balloons are manufactured by Lindstrand Balloons USA, located in Galena, IL. All of our aircraft carry standard airworthiness certificates issued by the Federal Aviation Administration. Per FAA rules, our aircraft are inspected each year or every 100 hours, whichever comes first.

Hot air ballooning is a weather sensitive sport, it is unsafe for balloons to launch when it is too windy, or in unstable weather conditions. Prior to each flight our pilots consult multiple local and regional weather sources to gather up to the minute information.

SkyCab is fully insured and carries the maximum coverage available for all of our flight operations. To request copy of our insurance certificate please call our office at (502) 228-8955.

We would love to answer any additional questions about our services or safety practices that you may have, please contact our office at (502) 228-8955.

Pre-Flight and Safety Information
How long is the ride?

We will be in the air approximately one hour, and the entire excursion will take approximately 2 – ½ to 3 hours from start to finish.

What do I wear?

Dress comfortably as you will be outdoors for most of the excursion. You ,must wear closed toe shoes such as boots or athletic shoes – no sandals or high-heel shoes are permitted. If you are taking a flight in the morning we recommend you bring another pair of shoes to change into after the flight due to the dew on the ground – your feet will be wet after the flight.

Is it cold in the balloon?

Under normal conditions the temperature will drop approximately 3 degrees every one-thousand feet in elevation. We normally fly between 500’ and 1,500’ above the ground so the temperature will not vary greatly. If you are cold natured please feel free to throw a jacket in with you and we can stow it away in the basket until you need it.

Can I bring a camera?

You are more than welcome to bring a camera or a video unit but please keep in mind SkyCab Balloon Promotions is not responsible for damage which may result to the unit during takeoff or landing. Each passenger must be able to have their hands free to hold on during the lift off and landing and the camera cannot interfere with this.

Are there limitations?

Absolutely – YES. If you are pregnant, just had surgery, have knee or back problems, or can’t stand up unassisted for at least one hour we are sorry, but no flights are allowed with these conditions. No Exceptions – please do not ask. If you have any of these conditions we are happy to give you a refund or transfer the certificate to someone else.
If you are older than 65 years of age please let us know ahead of time so we can talk about the flight and the physical requirements to ensure you are able to complete them. We require you to climb in and out of the basket, and at times the landings can be bumpy so we want to make sure you are aware of the conditions and you feel as though you will be able to participate in the flight.

Flight date-Arrival time

Listed on the first page of your confirmation IN BOLD RED PRINT is the date of your flight and the scheduled meeting time. Please note this because it is important not to be late. If you are late we may not be able to take the flight, or the flight may be shorter due to daylight constraints or wind conditions.

Please remember that more than likely once we have scheduled your flight we have had to turn away another person for the same date and time. If you need to cancel your flight it must be done no later than 48 hours prior to your scheduled meeting date and time. If we need to cancel the flight due to weather or other constraints we will try to notify you as soon as possible.
• Cancellation with less than 48 hours notice may result in your loss of your balloon ride without refund or rescheduling if the weather during your scheduled balloon ride is conducive to a flight.
